Do Ducks Have Teeth?
My kid asked me this after watching a duck rip apart a chunk of bread at the park, and honestly it stumped me for a second — you can see something in there that sure looks like teeth. So I looked it up properly.
The short answer: no, but they’ve got something almost as useful
Ducks don’t have teeth in the way mammals do — no enamel, no roots, nothing embedded in a jawbone. But if you look closely at the edge of a duck’s bill, you’ll notice a row of small, tooth-like ridges called lamellae. They’re not teeth at all; they’re comb-like structures made of keratin, the same protein that makes up your fingernails and a bird’s feathers.
What lamellae actually do
Lamellae work like a sieve, not a set of chompers. A dabbling duck like a Mallard will scoop up a mouthful of water, mud, and whatever food is mixed in, then squeeze the water back out through the sides of its bill. The lamellae trap seeds, insects, and small aquatic plants while letting the water and silt escape. It’s filter feeding, essentially — closer to how a baleen whale eats than how a dog chews.
In diving ducks and mergansers that eat fish, the lamellae (and in mergansers’ case, actual serrated bill edges) are sharper and more pronounced, giving them a better grip on slippery prey. Mergansers in particular have earned the nickname “sawbill” because their serrated bill edges look remarkably tooth-like — probably the closest thing to real teeth you’ll find on any duck.
So how do ducks chew their food?
They don’t, really — not the way we do. Ducks swallow food more or less whole, and the actual grinding happens later in a muscular organ called the gizzard. Ducks (like most birds) swallow small bits of grit and sand, which sit in the gizzard and act like millstones, breaking down tougher food as the gizzard’s muscles contract. It’s a completely different digestive strategy than chewing first, but it gets the job done.
Do any birds have real teeth?
Not anymore. Fossil evidence shows that early birds, like Ichthyornis, did have actual teeth tens of millions of years ago. Modern birds lost them somewhere along the evolutionary line, likely because a lighter, toothless skull made flight more efficient. What we see today in ducks, geese, and a handful of other species is a clever workaround — structures that do a similar job without the weight or maintenance cost of real teeth.
